Whether it’s on the track, the stage or in an exam setting, there are skills we can learn to help us to perform at our best. This often begins with understanding how our minds work and the science behind enhanced performance.

The Mind Room’s Co-Founder, Sport and Performance Psychologist, Michael Inglis, shares the books and podcasts he recommends for anyone looking to learn, grow and improve in various fields.

Read

Mindset by Carol Dweck

In Mindset, Stanford University psychologist, Carol Dweck, explores how success in different fields (in sports, school and our relationships) is influenced by the approach we take. People with a fixed mindset tend to believe their abilities and talents are fixed, whereas people with a growth mindset believe they can change and grow. Dweck explains that we all have both fixed and growth mindsets in different areas of our lives, and invites us to explore how we can adopt the right mindset to motivate us to perform at our best.

Going to Pieces Without Falling Apart by Mark Epstein

Psychiatrist Mark Epstein weaves together western medicine with Buddhism to explore why happiness comes from the ability to let go. By balancing our ego’s need to constantly “do” with our inherent need to “be”, we can find contentment and peace to lead a satisfying life.

Peak Performance by Steve Magness and Brad Stulberg

Peak performance – no matter the field or task – is often driven by common principles. In this book, journalist Brad Stulberg and performance scientist and Olympic coach Steve Magness, explain the psychological factors that drive enhanced performance. Peak Performance explores  the science behind great performance, and coaches readers on how to implement it into their own routines.

The Psychology of Enhancing Human Performance  by Frank Gardner and Zella Moore

Written by the founders of the Mindfulness-Acceptance-Commitment (MAC) approach, this text provides a structured step-by-step guide on how to enhance human performance. MAC connects scientific knowledge of self-regulation with acceptance based behavioural interventions. Whether you’re an athlete, health care professional working in emergency, or a business person, the material can be integrated into your day-to-day to help you perform at your best.
